Tip: Make a distressed font with GIMP
The other day I had need to make a sort of distressed/grungy/textured looking font using The GIMP. You know the kind of thing. A little googling bought up Grunge texture text from gimp.pixtuts.com, which got me most of the way towards the effect I wanted. This video is my simplified version of that approach. Being lazy I prefer simple. In the video I use this wood texture from textureking. I used a photo of a fence in the mist for my actual project, applying the same technique several times to get just what I was after. Props to nor for suggesting I post about it. There is a high res version if you want to follow along or don't have flash. Read More …

Tip: Selective Focus Effect with GIMP
As you can see from the pic above, by Vincent Lafore, selective focus tilt/shift photographs can create an amazing toytown feel to them. I've used a lensbaby composer to similar effect, for example in my photo set Toytown, but the true master of the art in my opinion is Olivio Barbieri, whose work is truly stonking. Read More …

Iceweasel/Firefox 4 or 5 on Debian Squeeze
I don't know if you heard about it but Fabrice Bellard recently made a Javascript PC emulator that could boot a full linux with emacs and vi and even a c compiler. Which is insane. I wanted to check it out, but the core Iceweasel on Debian Squeeze (3.5) isn't up to the job, Fabrice has coded it to work on chrome or FireFox 4 or greater. Now, I've compiled my own Firefoxen in the past and its a faff, especially when it comes time to upgrade. Fortunately the Debian Mozilla folk have made a nice tool to help you import a lovely Deb of iceweasel or icedove for your Debian system. Its just a matter of choosing your Debian version, and following the instructions. Here's a video. Read More …

Video: ORGCon Open BBC Session
In case you haven't noticed their "Protect Your Bits" poster in the background of the IT Crowd, let me introduce the Open Rights Group. The work they're doing on digital civil rights is crucial to everyone who values freedom or privacy on the interwebs. Not just activists and geeks but everyone who doesn't want to see the UK sleepwalk into a surveillance society. They had a conference, ORGCon in London on 24 July and this is the Open BBC session from that conference with Tony Curzon Price from OpenDemocracy, Mo McRoberts, and David Tomlinson. With Cory Doctorow facilitating. Read More …

Drupal 7 web server performance shootout: nginx vs Apache
I was interested to see how nginx would play with Drupal 7 and how much performance boost I'd get as compared to Apache . As it turns out an extra ~50 requests a second and a lower overall system load (as measured by top).
This is quite a high res screencast (thanks kazam!), so you might want to look at the high resolution version.Read More …- 2011-05-19T11:21:03Z

Video: Richard Stallman - A Free Digital Society
Richard Stallman is something of a legend. He singlehandedly launched the Free Software movement, and the GNU project and has been campaigning for software freedom for almost as long as there have been usable home computers. I jumped at the opportunity to see him talk at the Institution of Engineering and Technology. His topic was "A Free Digital Society", and he spoke on the various problems — nonfree software, software as a service, invasion of privacy, and such — that are often ignored by the discourse of digital inclusion. ALF: Apache log filter
ALF is a filter for people using Apache logging to plain text logs, who still want the flexibility of being able to search their logs like a database. It relies heavily on Jeff Zucker's DBD::AnyData to do the clever stuff, and overlays that with a simple Gtk2 interface. Read More …
