Projects

First thing, I have taken a fairly liberal interpretation of what a project is. So, a project might be a little hack I did one weekend, or something I made, or it might be a bit of work that I've done as a volunteer or even a bit of paid work that I've done. Well, I think you get the idea!

Some of the pages I've filed under projects were previously elsewhere on the site. So the projects section also serves as a test for my CMS data model. Please do contact me if you notice any brokenness. I might even fix it!

  • Lessons from Community Webhosting in Oxford: ox4.org

Back in 2008 me and my pal Penguin decided that it would be fun to have a webserver to play with. Nowadays, it doesn't cost much to have a virtual server with awesome hosts like Bytemark. But it still costs. Plus we wanted to provide a bit of a community activist resource. So, we figured that the best thing to do would be to share our server and use it as a resource for activism in Oxford. Well, we did that and now we're running a small scale activist orientated webhost, ox4.org — it's our postcode. We've learned some lessons along the way, and we carry on learning as we go.

Our objective with ox4 was that it could be a hobby for both of us, that it would run itself as much as was humanly possible, and that it should help groups and individuals from Oxford or from the wider activist community. We chose to host with Bytemark, because they are pretty awesome. Most hosting companies don't answer the phone, Bytemark have somebody competant the other end. I know that Debian rock solid, reliable and, crucially, a piece of piss to maintain. So naturally we chose Debian as our OS. We didn't have any ambition to make money, so we just ask ox4 users to chip in towards the costs we have to pay. We reckon we almost break even. Read More …

  • Collaborative pornography and making Windows 7 rsync

This should be an unusual blog. I'm attempting to combine a belated shoutout for nor's collaborative porn project, OpenSauce with a howto guide to making rsync work on windows. Lets see how it that works out.
    The OpenSauce Project
Nor's radicalx project has previously investigated the connections between activist and "kinky" cultures. Now she is interested in exploring the connections between the free culture/free software movement and sexuality in cyberspace. Using a simple wiki, the project investigates what collaborative pornography might look like. Rather than a broadcast, centred, patriarchal model of sexuality, where some distant professional decides what are the rules of the game, OpenSauce uses the technology of the "open source" movement to enable the internet community to create a collaborative fantasy together. • Seven Languages In Seven Weeks

There is an idea, popularized in the Pragmatic Programmer book that its good to learn a new programming language every year. Seven Languages In Seven Weeks takes the concept one stage further, although clearly only for certain values of "learning". One is never going to be proficient at any language in a week, despite what Sams books may tell you!

I picked up Bruce Tate's book from a physical bookshop (!) recently intrigued by the idea of doing a bit of quick comparative language learning/reading. I'm going to keep a record of how I get on with learning all the languages as I go along. Now there is an important proviso for a busy person like me. I probably won't make my seven weeks seven consecutive weeks, I'll just do a new language when I get the chance. Read More …
